Elbert (Vick) Vickland died January 19, 2020 in Sacramento of heart failure at age 86. Born May 12, 1933, in Stockton, CA, the grandson of Swedish immigrants. His parents, Clarence and Thelma, moved frequently but he spent many years in the Bay Area. He married Beverly Boe in 1956, served three years in the Army, then raised sons Mark & Jim in San Jose. He earned a bachelor’s degree at SJSU, and an MSW degree through UC Berkeley, and was employed as a psychiatric social worker. The family then spent two and a half years with the Peace Corps in Western Samoa, after which they settled near Auburn, CA. After a divorce, Elbert moved to Sacramento where he continued to work until age 72. He was an avid enthusiast of dancing, singing, boating, camping, hiking, and skiing, among numerous other activities. He survived cancer and survived a heart attack while playing softball, and he remained socially engaged to the end. He enjoyed this life and intended to live 120 years. He was preceded in death by siblings June, Jack, and Lois, and by former wife Beverly. He is survived by brother Clayton/Bill, sons Mark (Sandra) and Jim (Karen), and five grandchildren plus three great-grandchildren. A memorial is planned February 29th.
