Funeral services will be held Friday, March 1, 2019, at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Orangevale, California, at 2:00pm for Mary Juanita “Nita” Simms who passed away peacefully on Friday, February 15, 2019, at home in Citrus Heights, California.
Nita was born on June 11, 1935, in Abbeville, Louisiana, to Aurelie “Jack” and Lillian Stelly. She attended Meaux High School and went on to attend Southwestern University (now ULL) in Lafayette, Louisiana. In 1957, she married Jim Faulk and together they had four children. In 1979, Nita remarried Jim Simms, where they lived in Danville, California, and then retired to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Nita enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, photography, crafts of all kinds, and being part of many different organizations within the community and the church.
She worked as a pre-school teacher and in the insurance industry for several years, and later owned and operated Danville Camera and Sound along with her husband. They loved to travel all over the world, especially to Africa, where they organized photo safaris to see her beloved elephants.
She was a kind and giving person who had the most infectious giggle and always gave the warmest hugs. She never let anyone feel left out, and her home was always filled with kids and neighbors.
She will forever be known for managing an impeccable household, her affinity for elephants, and her love of a home-cooked Cajun meal.
Nita is survived by her children Reggie, Mike, Neal (and Laurie), and Angie; her grandchildren, Jason, Jamie (and Sam), Gianna (and Chad), Jordan, and Jack; and great-grandchildren Riley, Nolan, and Everett. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Lillian Stelly, her beloved brother, John McNolan “Mac” Stelly, and her husband, Jim.
