Hugh Eric Bertram was born in Spanish Town, Kingston, Jamaica. He was raised by loving parents and grandparents. In 1963, Hugh and family immigrated to England. He completed primary and secondary school in London. The family immigrated to the United States in 1968, where he was drafted into the Navy during the Vietnam War. Hugh became an American citizen. He served aboard the USS Dewey as a Boatswain Mate. He met and married Doreen in 1971 and was honorable discharged from the Navy in 1972. Hugh and Doreen have one daughter from their union. The family moved to North Highlands, California. Hugh worked as a self-employed Master Automobile Mechanic. Hugh and Doreen divorced in 1983 after 12 years of marriage. Hugh met Georgene Jaekel in 1990. The two remained devoted to each other for 28 years until his death. Hugh enjoyed gardening and yard work. He raised chickens and a turkey and sold fresh eggs on the side. He was an avid cyclist and could ride for miles.
He was preceded by his father (Eric). He leaves behind to cherish his memories: a mother, Verna Bertram of Ft Lauderdale, FL, a lifelong partner, Georgene Jaekel of North Highlands, CA, a daughter Stefanie Mukundwi (Edson) of North Las Vegas, NV, four grandchildren, Ethan, Elle, Evan and Emery, a sister Kathy Bryant (Thomas) of Denver, CO, aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins.
