Carolyn Louise Amelunxen Modeste
January 30, 1927- June 30, 2018
On June 30, 2018, Carolyn died peacefully in Roseville, CA with her daughter Celia at her side.
She was born on January 30, 1927 in Milwaukee, WI to Norbert and Katherine Amelunxen. The family later moved to Elm Grove, WI where she attended Holy Angels High School and then Marquette University. She was distinguished in 1947 by being the first woman to graduate with a Bachelors of Electrical Engineering from Marquette.
She moved to Pasadena CA, in 1948. After being deemed too young to work at Jet Propulsion Labs, she went on to work for the US Navy at China Lake, CA and at the EIMAC division of Varian.
On Sept 12, 1953 she married August Modeste. The couple moved to San Carlos, CA and had 4 children. After putting engineering on hold in favor of raising her children, she spent her later career at Raychem in Menlo Park, CA.
She moved to Roseville in Sept 1999 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
She was active in AAUW and the Roseville Newcomers, as well as an avid bridge player and talented seamstress. She made the world’s best apple and lemon meringue pies.
Carolyn was predeceased by her husband August in March 1973, and grandsons Nickolas and Steven.
She is survived by her children Rob Modeste, Peter Modeste, Linda Modeste, and Celia McAdam, as well as grandchildren Samantha Baldwin, Richard Hunter, and Jacob Modeste, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at St. Clare's Catholic Church, 1950 Junction Blvd, Roseville, CA on July 17 at 11AM. Burial will be private.
